Everybody is home!

The last few days have been pretty busy.  I was discharged on Saturday, but Giabella had to stay for observation in Special Care a little longer.  She was still breathing faster than they like and on extra oxygen.  The tube in her nose is the oxygen and the tube in her mouth is to feed her when she is breathing too fast because they don’t want her to asphyxiate.

Friday in Special Care

But she made leaps and bounds in the last few days.  Friday night they took out the oxygen tube and she did great.  Saturday, they started nipple (bottle) feeding her and she actually pulled her own tube out during the day!  Giabella knew she was ready so took it upon herself to help her nurse out.  By the end of the day she was a bottle eating champ and making us very proud. She looks so much different already with all the tubes out.

No more oxygen, still got that feeding tube

All tubes are out!

We thought she might be able to go home on Sunday, but although she made so much progress, they still wanted to keep her one more night since her breathing was still a little fast.  So we hung out all day Sunday and worked on my Mommy skills since they were lacking from not being able to spend much time with her.  Jason got to spend some quality time...she reminds me of him so much.

Monday, she made even more progress by having her second successful breastfeed.  Since she was premature she needs to take her time breastfeeding, only doing it a few times a day at first and working her way up.  Partly because it wears her out and she gets really tired while feeding and also to make sure she gets enough to eat every time, which it is hard to do with breastfeeding.  But with the progress she has made so far, I know she will be a breastfeeding machine in no time.

Getting ready to go home
Since Giabella has been doing so well, we all went home today at 3pm and have been doing great.  Her and I took a little nap the second we walked in the door.  It has been a tiring last few days and we are ready to start hanging out in the comfort of our own home.

Thursday, August 25, 2011 - A Beautiful Day!

It all began Thursday morning when I woke up at 3am with what felt like I peed my pants.  There wasn’t too much so I wasn’t sure if my water broke or I just lost control of my bladder.  Jason had to leave at 6am for work, so I stayed in bed but wasn’t able to get back to sleep.  At 5:30am I started having small contractions and told Jason that my water may have broke and I may be having contractions, so I may be calling him later.  I kept myself busy doing laundry, vacuuming and getting things cleaned and continued to slowly leak fluid.  At 9:30am I called my doctor and the nurse told me to come in to check if my water had broke.  At 11am the doctor said it had indeed and that I was 4cm dilated, I was going to have a baby today.

I called Jason and my Mom to let them know.  The nurse brought me over to the hospital and got me all set up.  Jason ran home to get our bags and got to the hospital around 12:30pm.  My contractions were progressing, but definitely manageable.  About half an hour after Jason arrived they started getting pretty strong and I was not feeling so hot.  During contractions I did not want to be touched and did not want any noise, so that kicked pretty much all our “techniques” right out the window.  Jason did an amazing job at being there and letting me go.  For about two hours I breathed through contractions and nearly fell asleep between them because of exhaustion with my eyes closed almost the entire time.  Half way through the strong ones I almost called for the epidural, but everything came pretty quick.

When Jason arrived at the hospital
Toward the end I walked around for a short while and started to have the urge to push.  They rushed in the delivery squad and within half an hour at 3:25pm on Thursday, August 25, 2011 we pushed out a 5lb 10oz, 19.25in baby girl and that was that.  She cried and cried for almost the entire hour she was in the room before they had to take her away to monitor her.  I was only able to hold her for a few minutes, but it was the best few minutes of my life.

Just after birth
She has quite the cone head from sitting down in my pelvis for the past month.  The doctors said it should go back to normal shape in the next week.  She spent Thursday night in the NICU because she had some fluid in her lungs and was having a hard time getting oxygen, things that come along with being born just over four weeks before her due date.  We are so sad that she had to be away and isn’t able to be with us in the room, but I know she is strong and stubborn and will be able to get through this, stronger than ever.  Today she is breathing better and was moved to the Special Care unit, a step up from the NICU.  Hopefully she will be ready to go before tomorrow when we are scheduled to checkout.  Grandma Sally got here late Thursday night and has gone with us to visit the little girl twice now.

With Baby Girl Palermo in Special Care
Our little girl truly is amazing and despite her challenges, she is tough and strong and making great progress.  We love her more than I could have ever imagined and know she will get through this to be a healthy, beautiful girl.  We are so excited and blessed to have her in our lives.  After hours, or months, of procrastinating, we finally came up with a name, Giabella Schoen Palermo.

One More Appointment Down!

Today I had my 35.5 week appointment.  It started with an ultrasound so the doctor could check on how things are coming along.  Everything looked good and the baby is head down and facing my right side.  They usually try to give an estimate of the baby’s weight, but the head was too far down to measure so the ultrasound tech said the measurements wouldn’t be that accurate.  She estimated around 5lb 12oz and the heartbeat was 145bpm, both are normal.  Unfortunately we don’t have any exciting pictures because the baby is too big at this point to see much.

Next we saw the doctor.  She explained that my amniotic fluid level was getting toward the lower end of the spectrum, which is nothing to worry about at this point, but she wants me to come back in on Friday for another ultrasound to check how the levels are trending.  Then she did an exam to see how I am progressing, I am approximately 2cm dilated, 80% effaced and the baby is at a 0 station.  She said I could go into labor as early as this week or not for another few weeks, but she doesn’t expect me to make it to my due date.  So looks like this Little Guy/Girl may be coming early!

This was a slight surprise to us.  I have felt more and more pressure in my groin in the last few weeks, but haven’t had anything even resembling contractions so I did not think I would be this far along.  But this does make me realize I need to get on my horse and prepare for this baby!  I thought for sure I would be pregnant past my due date and have another four and a half weeks to prepare, so I’ve been taking my time…still have a few things I need to buy, unpack and clean baby clothes and pack my bag for the hospital.  Looks like I got some work to do!

I will post another update after my appointment on Friday.  If you ask me, I don’t think this baby is coming for another few weeks, but then again I did not think I would be this far along!  We will see!

A Work of Art

Jason's Picture Frame
Jason saw the frames that I painted and decided he wanted to join in on the fun.  We got him a frame and he used his artistic side to create this masterpiece.  Well done my friend.
